Shan Shui
Home in Paradise
山水 Shan Shui is a style of traditional Chinese painting that depicts mesmerizing natural landscapes, most often of mountains and rivers.
My 山水 Shan Shui series is inspired by a dance called, “The Painting Journey: The Legend of a Panorama of Mountains and River” and the book, 山海经 Shan Hai Jing (The Classic of Mountains and Seas).
Amidst the turbulence of the COVID19 pandemic and the increase in anti-Asian hate that came with it, I wanted to create a sacred space where I would feel safe, respected, and celebrated as a Chinese-American woman. This led me to paint various versions of “paradise,” influenced by landscapes from the 山海经 Shan Hai Jing where hybrid identities are considered powerful. Through intuitively chosen color palettes, layers of scenery, and intricate designs “carved” into the paintings, my intentions are to inspire breathtaking wonder within the audience as well as deepen appreciation of Chinese lore and what it can teach us.
