ABOUT THE ARTIST

Angela Han is a Chinese-American, multidisciplinary creator who builds speculative worlds (“Paradises”) where women are eternally respected, celebrated, and cherished. In a process she calls “mythmaking,” Han weaves together research on various disciplines (music, folklore, herstory) with reflections of her own lived experiences to create new narratives that embody her hopes for the future. These stories are brought to life through intricate, multilayered paintings featuring rich, lyrical compositions. Her artwork has been exhibited at Arc Studios & Gallery, I-Hotel Manilatown Center, Sanchez Art Center, SOMArts, and Voss Gallery. Han is the recipient of the San Francisco Arts Commission Artists Grant (2021) and California Arts Council Individual Artists Fellowship (2023). She currently serves on the Board of Directors at the Asian American Women Artists Association (AAWAA).

As a Chinese-American woman artist, I strive to create spaces - Paradises - where women who look like me and/or with whom I share similar life experiences are respected, honored, and celebrated. I ask these questions: What does paradise – an idealized space, a true home, a fulfilled sense of being - look like for Asian women? How would thriving within this paradise feel day to day, and in the long-term? What elements are necessary to cultivate this space so that Asian women believe they can reach above the stars, overcome the impossible, and push beyond societal expectations? What would it take to build a home where Asian women feel respected, cherished, and celebrated as powerful forces of change and transformation?

My current foci include amplifying composers who identify as Asian / Asian-American women through my project, “Realms of Courage: Celebrating Asian Women Composers,” and building a speculative world where eight legendary horsewomen choose to live against society’s standards and expectations – embodying resilience, relentlessness, and dogged determination – in a new multidisciplinary series called, “Ba Wang” (8 Kings).
