ABOUT THE PROJECT

“Realms of Courage: Celebrating Asian Women Composers” amplifies composers who identify as Asian women through art inspired by their music and lived experiences.

The Realms of Courage Composers include: Wang Jie, Theresa Wong, Theresa Calpotura, Shruthi Rajasekar, Midori Larsen, Melissa Dunphy, Liliya Ugay, Kyong Mee Choi, Julie Zhu, Juhi Bansal, Jennifer Jolley, Jean Ahn, Emily Koh, Chihchun Chi-sun Lee, and Bosba Panh.

Each composer is interviewed by artist, Angela Han, about their unique creative processes as well as their experiences navigating the music field. While listening to their music, Angela reflects on how the composers’ music shape her emotions and imagination. These interviews and reflections serve as inspirational fuel for the creation of 135 artworks celebrating the composers’ lives, music, and accomplishments.

In May-June 2022, “Realms of Courage Composers Panels” were featured in the 25th AnnualUnited States of Asian America Festival - Generations of Power (USAAF) hosted by the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center. This series of virtual panels provided the public with the opportunity to engage with the Realms of Courage Composers in real time!
