“While I’ve certainly created artwork inspired by music and the lived experiences of composers, ‘Journey of 1000 Miles’ has been my first in creating artwork in sync with live-music, through an intensive collaboration with both the composers and musicians. The artwork has been choreographed meticulously, intentionally, so that the compositional elements of the music correlate with the compositional elements of the art.”
A Glimpse Behind the Scenes
A glimpse from “Journey of 1000 Miles” Concert #2 on May 10, 2025 at the Clocktower Salon, San Francisco. In this video, Angela Han paints in time to the music of “The Usual, Unusually,” composed by Jean Ahn, while following along with the score (placed in front of her on a music stand). Next to Angela, the music is being performed by Leah Froyd (violinist), Dana Marie Chan (pianist), and Zoe Lee (cellist) from Insight Chamber Players. The Sketches
Each of these “sketches-paintings” was created by Angela Han in her artist studio in preparation for the “Journey of 1000 Miles” concerts. The sketches are inspired by the composers Jean Ahn (“The Usual, Unusually”), Yangfan Xu (“Dogon Masks”), and Juhi Bansal (“Wings”), and painted in practice to previous recordings of the composers’ music.
Journey of 1000 Miles was presented by Insight Chamber Players, Angela Han Art LLC, and Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center (APICC). This multimedia concert series was featured in the 28th Annual United States of Asian America Festival (USAAF2025) - Critical Refuge.
